The people behind DecisionOpt, and why we started it.
Why DecisionOpt Exists
DecisionOpt started with a pattern that was hard to ignore. Through years of OR work and mentoring, companies kept reaching out to Alok for guidance: how to hire OR talent, how to frame an optimization project, whether an idea was even feasible. The need was everywhere. But the large consulting firms that offer OR services are out of reach for most companies, so most of that value was going unrealized.
DecisionOpt was founded in 2024 to bridge that gap: decision intelligence made accessible to companies that could never justify a big-firm engagement, delivered by people who care that the efficiency actually shows up.
The mission goes beyond client work. We teach OR, we mentor the people entering the field, and we work to bring the OR community together.
Dr. Alok Patel
Founder
Alok holds a PhD in Operations Research from IIT Bombay. Before founding DecisionOpt, he headed the development of decision support tools for one of India's largest B2B e-commerce supply chains, and led a team at ExxonMobil building optimization systems for LNG supply chain operations and production planning. His work spans network design, last mile routing, scheduling, manpower planning, and capacity planning across logistics, e-commerce, manufacturing, and energy.
On every engagement, Alok is the scientist in the room: framing the problem with your team, building the models, and staying involved through deployment. Beyond client work, he runs OR Guru, mentoring students and early-career professionals in Operations Research, and conducts industry workshops on mathematical programming and scalable OR implementations.
Dr. Arvind Kumar
Mentor & Advisor
Arvind holds a PhD from the University of Florida and has applied Operations Research in industry for over two decades, spanning railways, airlines, warehousing, and fulfillment, on problems across scheduling, routing, and network optimization.
He teaches Operations Research at India's leading universities, mentors startups on optimization and decision science, and has coordinated the Operations Research India Meetup since 2014. At DecisionOpt he is a mentor and sounding board, keeping our methods sharp and our advice honest.
